Greenock Morton Football Club and Morton Club Together are proud to launch our infrastructure project viewed towards improving facilities and fan experience at Cappielow Park for all our stakeholders and visitors, be they our own players and staff, opposing teams and supporters, sub-contracted staff or media and other visitors.

With Cappielow standing as the oldest ground in the SPFL and approaching its 150th anniversary in 2029 after Morton moved from the nearby fields on James Watt Dock in 1879 having previously resided at Garvel Park, we feel that this is an appropriate time to look towards ensuring we can make it a facility for us all to be proud of.
The old ground has seen many changes in its time, originally constructed as a bowl which hosted other field sports events and athletics meetings as well as football, it boasted a modest clubhouse before a pavilion was opened in 1900 to celebrate the club’s first promotion, but was burned down and replaced only seven years later.

Scotland’s 5-1 victory over Wales in 1902 saw 12,000 fans attracted to Cappielow for the ground’s only full international while Olympic gold medallist Eric Liddell ran the four hundred metres in Greenock both before and after his 1924 success in Paris.

The current main stand was opened in 1931 before the north terracing was covered in 1958 and christened The Cowshed, as it is still fondly named to this day.

Cappielow has seen many ups and downs in its life with promotions, relegations, cup upsets both good and bad, as well as stars from George French and Jimmy Gourlay, through Sir Stanley Matthews and Jimmy Cowan, Allan McGraw and the Nordic invasions of the sixties and nineties and the great Benny Rooney team of the late seventies and early eighties with Andy Ritchie and Jim Holmes to the current day.

While we realise that the outlay required to turn Cappielow into a modern venue would be significant, Greenock Morton and MCT believe that with the help of those who care about the club we can make gradual improvements which would be of benefit to all who visit our historic home.
